Survey

The process of making this survey was pretty difficult. My groups topic was about movie production. What was different about my survey compared to my group was that I had more open response questions. There wasn't any specific information I could conclude because the open ended questions gave a me lot of different answers. But, one of the demographics i asked was "what is your gender" and 55% answered female. Twenty people answered my survey.  Due to the high percentage of female participants, I believe that it correlates with the number of responses that likes Disney movies. Many Disney movies have a target market of young girls, so they probably watch those movies as they were growing up.  I think this was a good project for that was similar to the Apprentice because on the show we recently watched an episode where they had to fill out surveys about the Lexus promotion.

Nike Case Study

I like this case study the most. I found it interesting with all the Nike Statistics. The point of this study was to show how much Nike has grown. Also, to show the competitor, Adidas, and its growth. Nike had three times more growth rate than Adidas.
 Unit 3 Chapter 5
Consumer goods- purchased by the ultimate consumer for personal use
Business goods- purchased by the organizations for the use of their product
Point of difference- unique product characteristic or benefit that sets the product apart from the competitors product.
Product item- specific size or model of a product
focus group- panel of six to ten consumers who discuss their opinions about a topic under the guidance of a moderator.
I would like to learn about concussions and violence in sports. i feel like that would be interesting because it goes on a lot at our school.  For anyone who plays a MIAA sport, they have to watch a video on concussions. But i am more interested on the statics and how often they happen in games.

Marketing Mix

The product I am selling is reversible leggings for woman. These will be high end, I plan to sell them in the Lynn field Market street because that place is a more high end one, and will target people with more money. Girls can wear these while running or just as casual wear. I would price them of $75 because the competitor, Lulu Lemon, sells leggings for $98. With the cheaper price, and higher quality, my store will pass the competitor in sales. I plan to promote this by advertising on social medias. The legging will come in all different colors and designs. I would also sell different kinds of running sneakers in the store.

Why Boston should not Have the Olympics

Boston should not have held the Olympics because there is not enough space for all the travelers, and not enough places to hold the competitions. Boston is a crowded city by itself, it would be absurd to try and fit 500,000 visitors. There would not be enough hotels or parking for it. Also, the arenas are not big enough. Although they could use places on college campuses, they need to have 9,000+ seats.

Last Blog post!!! :):):)

This week in class we learned about Native Americans and Buffalo soldiers. We watched videos from ABC-Cleo to help further us understand why these people were treated differently than white people. We also read excepts from the Dawe's Act and Helen Hunt Jackson: A Century of Dishonor which explained to us how the Soldiers and Native Americans felt when federal policies were made.

After the civil war, people were still discriminating African Americans. Buffalo soldiers were Black Cavalry Soldiers. Most African Americans did not have jobs, so the government thought that allowing them to be put in Calvary troops would solve this problem. For the most part, buffalo soldiers were well respected and were given uniforms to fit in. Also, many Buffalo soldiers got high honor awards for being so courageous. But, there was still some racist people who would discriminate against them. This meant many fights broke out between men because they did not want an African american to have a higher power than a white person. The buffalo soldiers were also given jobs that white people did not want to do; these actions were intentionally discriminatory.

These people are Buffalo soldiers who helped fight in the Spanish War.

Unlike the buffalo soldiers, the Native Americans lived out west away from Whites; this was because they were forced to move due to the Indian removal act in 1830. This was intentionally discriminatory to the Native Americans. In a century of dishonor by Helen Jackson, it states "Of these, 130,000 are self-supporting on their own reservations, "receiving nothing from the Government except interest on their own moneys, or annuities granted them in consideration of the cession of their lands to the United States." It is clear to see that the Natives have been living independently without the help of the government. Later gold started being discovered on the land that the Indians were on, this is when battles started to break out. The troops fighting against the Indians used the tactic of total war. One strategy they used was getting rid of the buffalo, which they Natives depended on for almost everything (clothes, food, housing etc.) This was obviously discriminatory towards the native Americans; the government would do anything to drive them out of the land so they could get the gold they were looking for. Despite this, they did make actions to help to natives. They would try to educate and give religion to the Indians; also know as "Americanizing". This did the opposite, Native Americans became educated, but they lost their culture.

Overall, the government did discriminate towards the Buffalo soldiers and the Native Americans. Even when the government tried to help, they ended up making it worse. The government was greedy and did not actually try and help the soldiers and Natives problems. It was clear that whites would do anything to get their way, like trying to move the natives after they had been previously kicked off their own land. Instead of offering them jobs like working in gold mines, they destroyed everything they had, even their culture.

From Poor to Rich

Usually when one thinks of a monopoly they think of the board the game. In class this week we learned that a monopoly is a single company that controls all business and sells a unique product in the market. We watched videos and read biographies on Andrew Carnegie and John E. Rockefeller. Both of these men were very successful and both owned large companies. Although it is only one business, actions that monopolies make can have huge affects on the common worker.

Andrew Carnegie used to be very poor, but he rose his way up to becoming very wealthy and owning a steel business that later became a monopoly. In a bio we read in class it says  "Carnegie states his belief that every man's life should have two periods: the accumulation of wealth and then the distribution of that wealth back to the community. He maintained that rich men had a moral obligation to distribute their money for the public good with the same energy and systematic thoughtfulness they had to acquire it". Before Carnegie owned a monopoly he was very poor, at one point her worked in a textile mill making $1.20 a week. He slowly moved up in the business world and later became the second richest man in the world. He did this by owning a monopoly. He got the idea when he went on a trip in Europe; he noticed that the steel business was much more advanced than it was in the United States. This is when he decided to make his own steel business.  His business turned into a monopoly because he slowly bought out the other companies. He would lower the prices so other companies could not even compete. This affected the common worker because many people lost their jobs when they were bought out by Carnegie. But as Andrew states he believes that the second period in a mans life should be giving back to the community. After he became the second richest man in the world, he started donating to libraries, schools and hospitals. He gave millions of dollars to organizations helping out the common workers.

Unlike Carnegie, John D Rockefeller was born into a wealthy family, but he made his money from owning an Oil company. This monopoly later made him the wealthiest man of this time period. During the time of the depression he bought materials for very low prices which helped him out later. He also lowered the price of his oil so others could not compete, then he would buy out the competitors business. Later on both Carnegie and Rockefeller were know as Robber Barons, or cruel leaders during the industrial revolution who gained wealth in unfair ways. Many companies were upset from people loosing their jobs. Rockefeller did give back to his community by donating to education, medication, and science. This did help the public, but it did not make up for the hundreds of people who lost their jobs during the depression.

Over all monopoly's can hurt and help the common worker. If it wasn't for Carnegie and Rockefeller the american steel and oil businesses would not have been as successful as they were. Although many lost their jobs, millions of dollars were donated from these two men for education medicine and other organizations, which helped out their community.

Freedom From Above and Below

In class, our goal was to figure out how enslaved people gained freedom from higher power and how they gained it themselves. Also, we analyzed different pictures and documents to see how Abraham Lincoln's actions were influenced by the actions of enslaved Americans. Lastly, we watched a PBS film called "The Civil War" to help further us understand how people were gaining their freedom.

Although there was many enslaved people, some would later get freed from a higher power, or from a lower power. In the picture above it shows Abraham Lincoln giving power to a slave. This would be an example of freedom from above, because the slave is getting freedom through someone in a higher class. In the PBS film, it showed how a girl escaped a plantation and hid in her grandmothers attic. She later left and went North to gain her freedom. This is an example of freedom from below because she did not have any one from a higher class help her gain freedom.

During the course of the Civil war, Abraham Lincoln's' views on enslaved Americans changed. He started off saying  "If i could save the union without freeing any slave, i would do it; and if i could save the it by freeing all the saves, i would do it; and if i could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, i would also do that."  Lincoln said this in his opening letter to Horace Greeley in 1862. This shows his biggest concern was not freeing enslaved Americans, it was saving the union. In 1862, the union was not winning most battles, it was mostly the confederate side. He felt that he should save the union first, then he would focus on freeing the slaves. A couple months later Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg address. He said "It is rather for us to be here dedicated the the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that the cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-- that we highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." After writing this he realized that the cause of the war was about slavery, not just the North vs South. He realizes tons of people lost their life for this cause, and he felt that slavery should be abolished immediately.
