Is Jackson really a "Peoples President"?

A leader is a person who guides a group of people to become better. A good leader tries to help out everyone, not just their favorites, or supporters. Our essential question this week was " Is Andrew Jackson's long standing reputation as the peoples president deserved? Why or why not?" I believe Jackson had the right ideas for helping others like the Indians, middle and lower classes, but he executed these ideas in the wrong way. To discuss this topic, our class split up into three groups, each researching the topic of the Indian removal, bank war, or the spoils system for a conclusion to our question. My group made a slide show about the Bank War.

Jackson made many decisions during his presidency, but three of his actions really showed how he was as a president, or leader. These actions being the Indianan removal act, the Bank war, and the Spoil system. During the Indian removal act, Jackson forced native Americans out west to present day Texas. Unfortunately the journey was to long for the Indianans and many died along the way; this is also know as the trail of tears. He wanted these people to move so white people could be priority to natural resources. Jackson was cruel to the natives, and did not think about how they would feel by being moved after they had lived their whole lives in that area. Jackson also tried to help out the middle and lower classes by vetoing the second national bank, this was called the bank war. He thought creating the new bank would mean corporations would outrun small businesses, and eventually shut them down. After, he gave out tons of money to pet banks, and they produced to much money resulting in an economic crash, worse than the great depression. Lastly, is the Spoils system; this is when Jackson elected new members for government, who were loyal supporters to reward them, replacing current, qualified government workers. The people who he hired may have had little to no experience at all. Overall, he had the right intentions for most of his actions. I do not think he should have the title as the "peoples president" because he tried to be a good leader, but he ended up making things worse for his country.
