Ideology- a Look at Three Different Perspectives

During the 19th century, and even now, people have used ideologies to express how they would want a country to be run. An ideology is a system of ideas and ideals that help form a basis of economic or political theory and policy. In class we focused on three major ideologies called conservatism, liberalism, and nationalism. We were split into six groups, each group having on ideology. Our job was to make a one minute presentation to explain what that ideology is, and how it affected social and political aspects during the nineteenth century. After viewing the other groups we got to vote on which group had the best presentation.
My groups one minute project was about Nationalism. Our project helped to explain Nationalism through pictures with a voice over. Nationalism is the ideology that asserted that a nation was a natural organic, entity whose people were bound together by a shared language, customs and history. An example of this was how France dominated a big part of Europe. Countries like Germany did not like this because it separated it's small principals.Looking at the social aspect of this expansion, nationalists did not like this because it meant boundaries of people with the same language and customs would be destroyed. Looking at the political standpoint, the small German principals along with other European countries despised Napoleons take over because it meant they would be under control of a foreign ruler.

This picture has been taking from the one minute project I helped make. During this slide it shows how Nationalists did not like Napoleon and his way of expanding the French Empire

After watching my class mates videos I learned about conservatism and liberalism. Conservatism was the ideology that asserted that tradition is the only trustworthy guide to social and political action. Conservationism affected the nineteenth century because the French were taking over, leaving foreign rulers to govern. Conservatives did not like this because they wanted a monarchy. They were also against this revolution because it created tons of chaos and violence. Conservatives just wanted to go back to the way Europe was before Napoleon. Liberalism was the ideology that asserted that the task of the government was to promote individual liberty. Liberals focused on ensuring that every male in the middle class had a say, not just the aristocracy. Also, they believed that each person had natural rights that shouldn't be taken away. Liberalism affected Europe politically because it prevented tyrannical rule.
This is a picture of John Locke, he was a philosopher during the sixteenth century. Many of the Liberals ideas were based off of his philosophies.

Full-length portrait in oils of a clean-shaven young man in eighteenth century dress: gold jacket and breeches, ermine cloak, powdered wig, white stockings, and buckled shoes.
This is King George III. He was king of Great Britain. He was a conservative. Also, he helped defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
