Many people throughout Europe were affect by Napoleon and his power. An officer who served closely with him said " To the emperor Napoleon, our sovereign, belongs alone the right to rule over our beautiful country"- Marshal Michel Ney. Along with Ney, many people liked Napoleon and his ways of ruling. But, there was others like Madame de Stael who did not like his ways. She one said " His system was to encroach {intrude} daily upon Frances liberty and Europe's independence... By altering between cunning and force he has subjugated (conquered) Europe. She was a member of nobility. Napoleon affected Europe In three ways: socially, economically. In class, we read articles about the people I mentioned previously and an article called " The Lost voices. These pieces of writing show how people viewed Napoleon and his ways of ruling socially economically and politically.
Napoleon had control of the majority of Europe. |
As you can see, Napoleon had control of the majority of Europe. Looking at the social aspect in France, it changed drastically during Napoleons time. He ended serfdom, which means if you were born poor, or a serf, you would not stay that way your whole life, now you had the opportunity to become wealthy. Also, he made a fair, modern, legal code which is still used today. After all the chaos from the French Revolution he built France with nice parks. In the article "The lost voices" someone wrote "Napoleon's peculiar combination of military genius, civilian disinterestedness and domineering will, were just what France wanted, wrote Young. "These qualities happened to be singularly appropriate to the time and place, and he had the remarkable fortune to be given the opportunity to display them on a great stage." His genius was military, according to Young. "Of his civil reforms the most to be said is that they may be on the whole, be described as making for progress." This quote explains how Napoleons timing and ideas were perfect on France. With the bad government previously the people of France were not happy, but Napoleon changed that. Looking at an economic perspective he didn't change Europe that much it was mostly France. He created a new banking system. Politically, Napoleon changed Europe the most. He dominated the majority of the continent, and took the other countries under his control. Each of the other countries had to follow Napoleonic code. Also, He crowned himself emperor, and put himself and other family members in charge
of countries he dominated.
of countries he dominated.
I think Napoleon had a very good impact on France to begin with, but then he let the power get to him. Many of the french people liked him because he ended the chaos from the past french revolution, but he also created chaos. He went to was many times, although he won most of the battles, he got greedy with power. "Andrews, who taught at the University of Iowa, did not live to see his book published; his friend and mentor, Cornell historian Carl L. Becker wrote the introduction of his late friend's book. Andrews goal was to review certain aspects and characteristics of his subject. "Napoleon was so inconsistent in many of his actions, so untrustworthy in much that he said of himself, and so all-inclusive in his ambitious designs that differing interpretations of the man are inevitable," wrote Andrews. "Doubtless this very fact is in no small degree responsible for the continued interest in his career." Although he did win many of his battles, when he went into war with Russia, during the winter, he lost 300,000 if his men. This is absurd because he already has power in other places. He should have kept himself just the military leader because this constant need for expanding the french government was unnecessary. The other countries didn't like having a foreign ruler. He should of just focused on doing small expansions, and focused on what just France wanted. If had made more social improvements, like ending serfdom, France would have succeeded much more in the long run.
